Rotary in Turkey

The first Rotary Club in our country was founded in 1954 in Ankara.

Between 1950 and 1952, journalist Falih Rıfkı Atay, journalist Ahmet Emin Yalman, Şükrü Esmer launch an initiative but could not have been successful.

Ankara rotary club was establıshed on 24 March 1954 With the second initiative initiated by Oğuzhan Koraltan in 1952. Nail Avunduk and Assoc. Dr. Mukbil Özyörük became founding member.

The first club president is Şahap Birgi.

Ankara Rotary Club which took Charter on 23rd March 1955 is the first Rotary club in Turkey

İstanbul Rotary Club was established on February 8, 1956 under the presidency of Oğuzhan R. Koraltan. Rıfat Bereket, İsmail Hakk Kutbay, Kazım Taşkent, Eli Rosenthal, Hilmi Naili Barlo and John A. Caouki are founding members of this club.

The third Rotary Club of Turkey is  İzmir Rotary Club.

This club was founded by the initiatives of Nejat Eczacıbaşı and John Caouki from Istanbul Rotary Club. 

Izmir Rotary Club held its first meeting on January 9, 1961, with its founders who are Sadi Aral, Cemil Atalay, Muvahhit Atamer and Süreya Birsel.

The fourth Rotary is the Bursa Rotary Club founded on 12 June 1963 with the initiatives of Zübeyir Şeyhun and initiative of the Istanbul Rotary Club.

Within the first ten years, the number of Rotary clubs has not exceed four.

Çankaya Rotary Club was added in 1965 and Samsun Rotary Club was added in 1966.

Today in our country, there are over 7500 Rotarians in 3 regions with no: 2420, 2430, 2440
